Red Flats Retrievers is owned and operated by Josh Lancaster. Josh has a long history in dog training, and specializes in training gun dogs for waterfowl and upland hunting. Josh believes that Red Flats Retrievers is a ministry and his mission strives to connect folks with great dogs that will become more than just a dog—they will become family. Josh is an avid hunter and his expertise gives him a deep insight into what makes a great gun dog. That said, Josh is the kind of person you meet once and call a friend. His love of dogs is surpassed by his love for people and service. 

Josh personally trains each of his client's dogs. Whether that be a puppy you purchase from him, a dog from a different breeder or an adult dog, Josh will customize a training plan to your desires, a rare thing in today's plug and play world of dog training. This personalized approach separates Red Flats Retrievers from the pack. Josh also offers training for non-sporting breeds upon consultation.

Obedience Training:

We believe in positive reinforcement training. A dog is loyal to those he trusts.

Puppy Head Start:

We offer two stages of puppy headstart training. Obedience & Gun Dog

Gun Dog:

Between eight and twelve weeks, you'll want to spark that innate desire to locate and retrieve.

Breeding:

Our Labrador retrievers are bred with excellent pedigrees, which by nature gives them personality, trainability, and drive.

  • Josh Lancaster (along with a couple of his trained hunting dogs) and I met around 3 years ago at a driven hunt. He is admired as a soft hearted, soft spoken Christian and an exceptionally wise and experienced dog trainer. He is especially keen on recognizing hidden characteristics . His comment: “Every dog, even within the same breed, will have at least one or more good or bad characteristics. Once that specific trait is recognized, I then capitalize on that trait to my advantage in deciding the direction or specific technique for training each individual dog. Even though 3 different clients may decide they want the same end results, I may use different training techniques to get there.” After several trainers over a 3 year period, though it is hard for me to admit, I should have turned my dog Annie, a 4 year old female American Brittany, over to Josh long ago. My time hunting birds is majorly over chukar and pheasant. Annie’s problem: Not staying on point and creeping in on the bird. Annie's recognizable characteristic was that she was extremely sensitive. With that knowledge Josh made adjustments to his approach and other minor corrections. Annie is now the most exceptional hunting dog I’ve ever had. My recommendation, at least spend time on a phone call or make a personal meeting to see what Josh’s take would be on how he would approach training your dog for the results you are wanting.
